It seems to be an agreement between dog breeder historians that the name for Bulldogs came about due to the fact that they were used to control, guard and bait bulls. Baiting bulls was considered to render the meat more tender and nutritious before slaughter. Bull baiting was eventually abolished in the 1800’s in England and the bullish or aggressive traits of the dog were bred out and resulted in the Bulldog that we know today, a very loyal, gentle and trustworthy dog that make great companions.
