EO (my human with the red hair) took me and our good friend Anna G down to Central Station one fine summer morning to meet and greet and catch sight of the King, who I might add, had most certainly not left the building. I was all shook up when I saw him…..wait, wait…them…omnipresent Elvis, I didn’t know where to look or where to turn…will the real Elvis please stand up! Lawdy, Miss Clawdy they were here to catch that Mystery Train to Parkes…out west young man… you heard me right….

Every country has it’s little bit of weird and wonderful and Australia is not short of it. We have a land of great beauty, multicultural diversity and a penchant for building big things, The Big Pineapple, The Big Banana, The Big Merino and The Big Oyster, to name a few…… and then there is the Parkes Elvis Festival. Out west and approximately five hours drive from Sydney a funny and vibrant festival has emerged and thrives. Parkes, most famously known for it’s radio telescope or ‘The Dish,’ has a bunch of Elvis fans and the Elvis Festival was instigated by these and other members of the community and has grown exponentially since it’s beginning in 1993, a very small event in comparison to today. It is held close to the birthday of Elvis in January each year…the Elvis Express Train from Central, Sydney is an annual highlight and carries Elvis fans out to the event and back each year.

Here’s what we found….and these, my friends, are the words we hummed….an ode by Elvis to the little doggies…..

A Dog’s Life

If I had my life to live over
I know just what I’d like to be
A pampered pet of a rich brunette
Sitting on my mama’s knee
Someone to love me, someone to care
Rubber duck dubble little fingers through my hair

I need a dog’s life
What a life, that’s good enough for me
That’s good enough for me

If I had a bone to be picking
A picking chicken or a steak
Curled up there in an easy chair
Man, that won’t be hard to take
I’ll always be faithful that’s what I’d be
Never bite a hand that feeds me, no siree

Just lead a dog’s life
What a life, that’s good enough for me
That’s good enough for me……
